Five sounds, one instrument. In this masterclass, Swedish producer Lakej builds the entire sonic world of his raw and hypnotic techno tracks inside Ableton Operator, and develops each one into a finished track foundation.

Lakej is known for releases on labels like Kazerne (Mord), Soma and MindTrip. After his first masterclass and the deep dive into techno kick drums, he now opens up his sound design archive: squeaky drones, FM basses, sci-fi bleeps and percussion built from nothing. No third-party plugins, no preset browsing, just one oscillator and a method that takes the pressure out of the creative process.

What you will learn

Squeaky drones from a square wave

The sound his students ask about most. A free-running LFO on pitch and band pass, re-trigger switched off, both modulated by the same triangle the way an MS-20 does it. Then: find the loop, split it into two frequency layers and stack them.

Bass drones with subtle FM

A second oscillator on a fixed frequency, just enough FM to pull out harmonics. The interesting spots are exactly where the sound almost falls apart. That becomes a call and response with the kick.

FM basslines that never repeat themselves

Random sequences from Ableton's seed generator, a sample & hold LFO re-triggering on every note, and a filter that tracks the key. On top of that a second modulation layer on an EQ band, running at a different speed.

Sci-fi bleeps and your own loop library

A bare sine, modulated on the pitch, that is all there is to it. One take of just under five minutes turns into 47 loops you can drag into any project. The bouncing routine is included.

Percussion and drum racks from pitch envelopes

Toms, stabs and noise percussion from the same source, sorted into a reusable drum rack. Plus the trick of looping a single hit inside Sampler until it becomes an oscillator of its own.

From loop to track foundation

In the second part Lakej fleshes out all five projects: atmosphere built from sends instead of new instruments, hi-hats with character, Auto Pan as a sidechain replacement, textures from wave shaping. And the moment where you have to stop collecting and start arranging.

What makes this masterclass different

Lakej reverses the usual order. Instead of tweaking the synth until the sound is perfect, he sets the parameters, hits record and lets it run. Only afterwards does he pick out the parts that work.

That takes away the pressure of having to pull the perfect hit straight out of the synthesizer, and eight minutes of recording deliver material for an entire track. Everything happens in Ableton Operator with stock devices. You can rebuild every step without spending a cent on plugins.

Record first, decide later

Most producers keep tweaking the synth until the sound is perfect and never get to the track. Lakej works the other way round: set the parameters, hit record, let it run, and only then pick out the moments that work. That takes the pressure off and turns eight minutes of recording into material for a whole track. This principle runs through all 16 lessons.

No magic, just a sine wave

The sci-fi bleeps you hear in almost every hypnotic techno track take exactly three moves: Operator on a sine wave, a random sequence in the piano roll, sample and hold on the pitch. The filter stays untouched. Lakej says it himself: it's no magic and no secret plugin, and that's exactly why you can rebuild it tonight.

Your sweet spots, not his

Lakej's conclusion after almost four hours: Operator is a Swiss army knife with a boring interface, and that's exactly what makes it so useful. Take a simple sound source, feel free to use the plugins the wrong way, collect the happy accidents and run everything through the wringer two or three more times. What sounds good in the end is your call, not his.
